Orthodontics

When Should I Consider Orthodontics?

Thinking that the need for orthodontics is in your near future? If your teeth are crooked and/or you are currently experiencing misalignment problems, you should consider orthodontics in order to correct your dental problems. When your teeth are not in their proper positions, you may become self-conscious as well as experience problems with your everyday life.

Why is orthodontics important?

Orthodontic treatment is necessary for anyone who does not have a healthy bite. A healthy bite makes it easier to perform all functions within the mouth, including chewing food, talking and biting down. Orthodontics uses a few different types of dental appliances that are specifically made to guide patient's teeth into their correct positions, with two of the more common appliances being retainers or braces.

According to the American Dental Association, the purpose of orthodontic treatment is to create a healthy bite, which means having straight teeth that properly meet opposing teeth in the opposite jaw.

When to consider orthodontics

The following is a list of specific reasons why adults should consider orthodontics to fix any irregularities in their teeth.

Because they have an overbite, underbite and/or crossbite

Treating a bad bite is necessary for someone to experience good oral health. An overbite is when the upper front teeth stick out too far over the lower front teeth. An underbite is when the upper front teeth are placed behind the lower front teeth when biting down. A crossbite is a term used to describe a situation in which the teeth are closer to the tongue or cheek instead of the opposite teeth.

Because their teeth are crooked

Orthodontics is a great option for fixing crooked teeth, whether they are minimally crooked or very crooked. When the teeth are not in their proper positions, they will cause problems sooner or later. While many adults choose to fix their crooked teeth because they want to have a more aesthetically pleasing smile, when the teeth are straight they are also much easier to clean. It is important to clean every part of a tooth as when it is not properly cleaned, a tooth decay diagnosis is right around the corner.

Because they have large gaps in between their teeth

Most dental patients who have large gaps in between their teeth want these gaps removed for cosmetic reasons, which orthodontics can do. The type of orthodontic treatment utilized will depend on the severity of the gaps, which includes retainers, braces and oral surgery for severe cases.

Are orthodontics in your near future?

Now that you know when to consider orthodontics, is it time for you to get the orthodontic treatment that you need for good oral health? While we have no control over the way that our teeth grow in, we do have the ability to make an appointment with a dental professional for treatment. Just like you make an appointment with your medical professional when something is wrong, you also need to make an appointment with your dental professional when living with crooked teeth or experiencing bite problems.
