Various Types of Dentures

Dentures are viable tooth replacement options that restore the look and function of your smile. Whether you are missing one tooth or all of them, these restoratives can serve as long-lasting alternatives. With a variety of dentures options, patients can determine which option will best meet their needs through a consultation appointment. Here is some information on each option.

Partial dentures

Partial dentures are for individuals missing one or multiple teeth in sporadic locations. These dentures are custom-crafted in an offsite lab to provide a natural-appearing look and snug fit. There are various forms an offsite lab can create:

Acrylic partial dentures

These removable dentures, commonly called flippers, are attractive for their economic value but less durable than other options. Their design consists of acrylic material for each part and has one or multiple artificial or false teeth that fit on the lower or upper jaw. Usually, they are recommended as a temporary solution until the patient can receive a more permanent option.

Cast metal partial dentures

The most common partial denture is cast metal. Like flippers, cast metal partial dentures are removable; however, they are far more durable. Their design consists of metal clasps and a false tooth. The clasps fasten to the teeth surrounding the empty space, supporting the false tooth. These partial dentures can last between seven and ten years.

Flexible partial dentures

Flexible partial dentures are seen as an alternative to acrylic partial dentures. Though they are still only seen as a temporary solution, they are introduced to those who have an allergy to acrylic material. Flexible partial dentures consist of nylon, vinyl, or nylon thermoplastic, all considered to be biocompatible with the human body.

Complete dentures

When individuals hear the term traditional dentures, they often think of complete dentures. They are for those who are missing an entire arch or both arches of teeth. Like partial dentures, complete dentures require an offsite dental lab to craft them for a natural appearance and function. However, the process will start by stopping by our office to receive impressions so that we may get the patient's exact measurements.

Traditionally, complete dentures consist of acrylic material but simulate a natural appearance, with a portion that looks like gum tissue and another with false teeth. They are removable and require daily or nightly cleaning and rebonding with an over-the-counter denture bonding agent. With proper care, they can last up to 10 years.

Implant-supported dentures

Implant-supported dentures are a favorite among patients and dental professionals. They provide long-lasting, permanent results and do not require constant bonding material purchases. Their design consists of multiple parts and requires multiple surgical procedures to place. However, patients will need to undergo a candidacy process before starting the process. The main concern is ensuring a patient has adequate amounts of healthy jawbone and gum tissue, no underlying health concerns that inhibit healing, and willingness to follow oral care instructions.

The first appointment will require installing the dental implant post(s) into the jawbone. The second appointment involves reopening the gumline to attach the dental implant’s abutment, which will jut out above the gums. The dental team will also take impressions of the patient’s mouth to follow the same steps of complete or partial dentures, whichever the patient requires. The final appointment will involve securely attaching the dentures to the abutments, allowing for a permanent fixture.
