There are more tooth replacement options available today than ever before. Still, a large number of patients still opt for traditional dentures. This option offers advantages other tooth replacements do not, and these advantages make dentures a better choice for some patients.

How

What is meant by “traditional dentures”

Traditional dentures are custom-made appliances, usually composed of porcelain false teeth in an acrylic base. When in the mouth, they are held in place by a combination of suction and the mouth's contours. Some denture wearers will use special denture adhesive to help keep them in place. Traditional dentures are removed for cleaning, sleeping, and maintenance.

Reasons patients consider traditional dentures

Though dental implants are growing in popularity, they are still not the right tooth replacement choice for many people. Here are some key reasons patients prefer traditional dentures

A cost-effective solution

Dental implants can come with a significant price tag. However, traditional dentures remain the most cost-effective tooth replacement solution. Dentures offer patients a way to restore their smile and chewing ability for significantly less money.

Faster tooth replacement

Tooth replacement is a process, no matter what options the patient decides on. However, dental implants can take months or even up to a year from start to finish. On the other hand, the process of getting dentures can take as little as a month.

Non or minimally invasive

Dental implants require significant surgical intervention, especially if the patient needs preparatory procedures such as bone grafting. In most cases, traditional dentures require little to no surgery. The patient may need some extractions and/or procedures to prepare the jawbone and gums. Still, the number and invasiveness of the procedures are considerably less.

Lack of jawbone density

Jaw bone density is an important factor in who is a candidate for dental implants. If the patient does not have sufficient jaw bone to support the implant, it could fail. Dentures are the wiser alternative for these patients.

Other health considerations

In addition to having sufficient jaw bone density, patients must be healthy enough for surgery. Certain medical conditions and other health considerations can interfere with a patient’s eligibility for surgery, and certain health issues may make it more likely for a patient to suffer implant failure.

Patients may opt for traditional dentures for one or a number of the above reasons. Sometimes, it is just a matter of personal preference and wanting to go with a more traditional solution to tooth loss.
